Biography & background:
As an infant Harold Pumpernickel (orginally Kunt) was found abandoned near a school, with a note saying "cahaya" (Malay for light). He was adopted by a couple of a Swiss expat and a local doctor working in Shanghai in the 1950s. There are no official birth records on him, therefore doctors estimated his age to be around a year when discovered. He was given the name Harold, named after his adoptive grandfather.
His adoptive mother (Ida Cheng) worked as a doctor studying novel approaches to complimenting Western medicine with traditional Chinese medicine. Harold's adoptive father (Manfred Kunt) worked as a translator and aide for European foreign affairs agencies. Due to his adoptive father's postings the family would live in different countries during Harold's youth. A great deal was spent in New Zealand, Switzerland and Germany.
Harold spend most of his youth in international boarding schools. Ultimately staying behind alone in Europe and pursuing a degree in philosophy to become a teacher. His parents migrated to Shanghai so that his adoptive mother could take better care of her parents.
During his time at university he met Johanna Pumpernickel. Harold was fascinated by Johanna's kindness and passion to restore justice and fight for the disenfranchised and unheard. The two became close early and Johanna inspired Harold to become more involved in communal efforts. Ultimately ditching his studies and investing into learning and practicing carpentry.
In sometimes radical ways the two would end up helping in all sorts of mutual aid efforts. To the point of operating together with groups like the RAF and helping maintain other cells of local resistance. Due to the often sometimes dangerous undertakings like stealing supplies for cut off communities they would travel around a lot to avoid detection by authorities.

Harold is kind-hearted and justice-minded. He has a passion for carpentry and homesteading, albeit not having a green thumb like Johanna.
