According to information provided by Bastion, the Mallet Men come from what appears to be a parallel dimension or alternate timeline, where Chinese unification resulted in the formation of a new quasi-religious order dedicated to the instrument of said unification - the mallet.

Mallet Men possess the ability to perceive "cracks" in the fabric of the world, and step through these cracks, utilizing them for instantaneous travel between Malletopia and other worlds. Due to the immense threat posed by the MalletMen, Bastion have designated them the highest threat on the island, and will go to any lengths to prevent the residents from initiating conflict with their world.
